The entire mass of fat divided by total body mass, multiplied by 100, is the body fat percentage (BFP) of a person or other living entity. Body fat contains both necessary and stored body fat. To preserve life and reproductive processes, essentials are required. Due to the needs of childbearing and other hormonal activities, women have a higher percentage of necessary body fat than men. The buildup of fat in adipose tissue, which protects internal organs in the chest and belly, is known as storage body fat. The proportion of body fat can be calculated using a variety of methods, including calliper measurements or bioelectrical impedance analysis.
Because it is the only body measurement that directly assesses a person’s relative body composition without consideration to height or weight, the body fat percentage is a measure of fitness. The commonly used body mass index (BMI) is a metric that allows people of various heights and weights to compare their adiposity.
The level of essential fat below which physical and physiological health is jeopardised and death is a certain conclusion. Above that, there is debate regarding whether a specific body fat percentage is better for one’s health.
Body fat may affect athletic performance: according to one source, the ideal body fat percentage for athletic performance is 12-18 percent for women and 6-15 percent for males.
Bodybuilders can compete at the essential body fat range; in fact, experienced personal trainers recommend that they do so just for the duration of the competition. However, since (a) the techniques to test such levels are, as noted below, inadequate in concept and incorrect, and (b) 4–6% is widely considered a physiological minimum for human males, it is unknown whether such amounts are ever obtained.
