The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is the world’s largest equities-based exchange, based on the total market capitalization of its listed securities. It is based in New York City. The Big Board, as the NYSE is known, is home to many of the country’s oldest publicly traded corporations. The NYSE is presently owned by the Intercontinental Exchange, which bought it in 2013.
The performance of all common stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange, including American Depositary Receipts issued by foreign businesses, Real Estate Investment Trusts, and tracking stocks, is measured by the NYSE Composite Index. The index constituents’ weights are computed using their free-float market capitalization.
