Excel DVARP Function Introduction
The Excel Dvarp function computes the variance (for a whole population) of the values in a database field (column) for just chosen records. A collection of one or more user-specified criteria defines the records to be included in the computation.
Description of Excel DVARP Function
Syntax :
=DVARP ( database, field, criteria )
Parameters :
- The following are the arguments:
Database :
- A set of cells that contains the database. The field names should be specified in the database’s top row.
Field :
- The database field (column) for which the variance is to be calculated.
- This can be a field number or the field name (i.e. the header in the top row of the database) surrounded by quotations (e.g. “Subject”, “Name”, etc).
Criterion :
- A set of cells containing the criteria for determining which records should be included in the computation. The range can include one or more criteria, which are given in one cell as a field name and the condition for that field in the cell below.
E.g. :

Step By Step Guide of DVARP Function
Example :
The Dvarp function is used in the following example to calculate the variance of Math results earned by male students. Cells G1 – H2 specify the conditions, while cell G3 displays the Dvarp formula. The Dvarp function above computes the variance of the values in cells E5, E8, and E11, and so returns the value 2.6 percent.
